From laser-guided bombs to targeting algorithms and drones, the rhetoric of precision has constantly reinvented itself to cloak war in a veneer of moral respectability. Maelle L’Homme and Marianne Perez describe how this discourse – from the Gulf War to Gaza – creates the illusion of “surgical” violence, and show how the integration of artificial intelligence into weapons systems merely serves to maintain this veil of deception, whilst potentially lowering the threshold for the use of force.
